How to join our choir

Is St Martin's Singers a choir you might join?

The first thing to do is to see if this is the kind of choir for you.

We are a project-based, upper voices chamber choir. Let's see what those words mean in practice:

Project-based

Not everyone sings in every concert, either because of other commitments, or because of needing to get a balance between parts. Singers join the concert, not the choir. Some sing in almost every concert, others very occasionally.

Upper Voices

We sing music in treble clef. All the members are women, at the moment, but there is no reason a male alto could not join.

Chamber Choir

We are a small group. Our smallest concert-group was 8, the largest 23. Usually we are between 14 and 16.

Please peruse our previous concerts to see our repertoire: it spans the history of music, from chant to contemporary. Think: challenging and worthwhile.

The best thing would be to come to a concert and listen.

Here are a few bullet points about us:

  • The choir usually sings in three or four parts, sometimes with only two or three voices on a part;
  • There are usually around 16 singers in a concert;
  • There are three or so concerts a year. Not everyone sings in every concert - you join the concert, not the choir;
  • There are usually only three rehearsals, and most people attend all of them. Rehearsals are usually in Stamford;
  • Performances are around the Stamford area, South Kesteven, Lincolnshire.
  • If you have a good level of sight-reading and performance skills, and/or homework. Please note the difference between practice (done at home) and rehearsal (done with the group);
  • For difficult modern music, rehearsal tracks are usually provided.

It is probably worth saying that although all our members are friendly, this isn't a social choir. We don't go for a drink after rehearsals, or do other social activities.

"Audition"

You are welcome to audition between concerts, but usually prospective singers attend a rehearsal prior to a concert, and, basically sink or swim.
