Pergolesi Stabat Mater

St Martin's Singers, an upper voices choir from Stamford, sings the celebrated Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, written in 1736 for the Cavalieri della Vergine dei Dolori di San Luigi al Palazzo in Naples. In the first half of the programme, there are four spirituals arranged by Hugh Roberton, Howard Skempton's captivating Five Poems of Mary Webb, and Unwatch'd by Alexander Campkin. Unwatch'd sets part of In Memoriam by Tennyson, and explores the idea of memory, or memory lost, as an effect of living with dementia. The piece embodies the feeling the composer experienced the first time his grandmother looked straight into his eyes and had no recognition of him.
